Driving Directions to Fort McNair

Please note that there was an error in the printed directions included with the invitations. I promise, the error was in the directions taken from the Fort McNair website! I am sorry for any inconvencience. The directions are reprinted below, with the correction in caps.

Fort McNair is located at 4th and P Streets Southwest, Washington, D.C. Please bring a photo ID – you will be required to present one to the guard at the gate before entering.

From Virginia (South) via the 14th Street Bridge:
Take 95 North or the George Washington Parkway North to 395 North into Washington, DC. Cross the 14th Street Bridge. Stay in the second lane from the right going across the bridge and follow signs for Route 1 (395 splits off to the right). After the split, get in the right lane and take the exit for Maine Avenue. At the light, turn LEFT onto Maine Avenue. Stay straight on Maine Avenue – you will pass the Waterfront on the right. Maine Avenue becomes M Street after you cross 7th Street. Turn right on 4th Street (the Waterfront Metro station and a Safeway store will be on the left). Go through one light and then the road dead ends at the front gate of McNair. Turn left onto P Street and enter Fort McNair through the second gate, which will be on the right.

From Virginia (West) via I-66:
Take Independence Avenue along the Tidal Basin. Follow signs for Maine Avenue. Stay straight on Maine Avenue – the Waterfront will be on the right. Maine Avenue becomes M Street after you cross 7th Street. Turn right on 4th Street (the Waterfront Metro/Safeway store will be on the left). Go through one light and then the road dead ends at the front gate of McNair. Turn left onto P Street and enter Fort McNair through the second gate, which will be on the right.

From Maryland:
Take 95 South toward Virginia. Just before the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, take 295 toward Washington, DC. Exit at South Capitol Street. Go over the Fredrick Douglas Bridge. Get in the right lane. Take a left at the light onto M Street. (This takes you over South Capitol Street). Turn left on 4th Street (Waterfront Metro/Safeway store will be on the right). Go through one light and then the road dead ends at the front gate of McNair. Turn left onto P Street and enter Fort McNair through the second gate, which will be on the right.

From Northwest DC:
From Constitution Avenue going east toward the Capitol, turn right on 7th Street. Turn left on Maine Avenue (the Waterfront will be in front of you). Maine Avenue becomes M Street after you cross 7th Street. Turn right on 4th Street (Waterfront Metro/Safeway store will be on the left). Go through one light and then the road dead ends at the front gate of McNair. Turn left onto P Street and enter Fort McNair through the second gate, which will be on the right.
